How to Use Distilled White Vinegar

White vinegar has many uses.  It is mainly used to disinfect, deodorize, and it can loosen dirt.  It can also remove stains, mineral deposits, and tarnish, and when used in the laundry it eliminates static cling when added to the rinse cycle.

Note: Don’t use on acid sensitive surfaces granite or marble.

Dark vinegars stain so use white distilled vinegar with 5 percent acetic acid.

As an alternative the acid in lemon juice works is also good for cutting grease and polishing metal.  Both of these items you can find on your next trip to the grocery store.  You can use the bottled lemon juice, but you’ll use more than if you were to squeeze as you need it.

Cleaning Up the Odds and Ends
By: Elizabeth B. Goldsmith, PhD and Betsy Sheldon

Beyond the typical household cleaning tasks that involve floors, furniture, fixtures, and more are some unique surfaces or materials that need to be cleaned, too. Here are some ways to address those items:

• For a gentle paint remover for your hands, use vegetable oil instead of paint thinner
• You can use this gentle cleaner for your garage floor or patio or kitchen floor: Mix ¼ cup of mild dishwashing liquid with 2 gallons warm water and apply. Rinse with clean water and air dry.
• When cleaning your vehicle’s exterior, do not use anything abrasive on the finish – that means no grit, such as baking soda, or anything acidic like vinegar. Try mixing several squirts or ¼ cup of mild liquid dishwashing detergent with 1 gallon of water in a bucket. Get some suds going, throw in the sponge, and clean away! Rinse with clean water, use a squeegee, and buff the car dry with a clean cloth.

Toothpaste

The combination of a mild abrasive, a surfactant (detergent), and an antibacterial agent makes toothpaste a potent stain-fighter. “Stick with standard paste, not gel, and steer clear of formulas designed for tartar control and whitening,” says Siegel-Maier. “These often contain chemicals and additional abrasives that can damage items such as fine silver.”

Price: About $3.65 for a tube.

Use It to Clean Your…
Acrylic accessories (such as desktop organizers): Squeeze toothpaste onto a toothbrush and work it into scratches until they diminish. Wipe residue off with a cloth.

Chrome fixtures: To polish faucets and taps in the kitchen or bathroom, smear a dime-size amount of toothpaste onto them, then buff with a soft cloth until they shine.

Scuffed linoleum: Reduce marks by scrubbing them with toothpaste and a dry cloth until no toothpaste residue remains.

Piano keys: Rub each key carefully with a damp cotton swab and a dollop of toothpaste. Wipe dry and buff with a clean cloth.

Tarnished silverware: Put a dab of toothpaste on a soft cloth, rub it onto the tarnish, then rinse with water and dry with a clean cloth.

Steam iron: Mineral deposits can stain an iron’s soleplate. Apply a dab of toothpaste and work it into the plate. Use a clean cloth to remove residue.

Tea Tree Oil
Soap and Water
Lavender Oil
Vinegar

Tea Tree Oil – an anti-fungal and antibacterial that has been used for centuries. It is potent a little goes a long way. To make a strong anti-mold spray needs only 1 teaspoon tea tree oil to 2 cups of water. Look for “100% pure essential oil” rather than fragrant, aromatherapy or perfume oil, which may mean synthetic. The bottle should be glass of a dark color to lengthen shelf life.

Soap and Water – reduces surface tension of water and creates a thin film around dirt molecules, bacteria, and even viruses. Look for vegetable based, non-petroleum, fragrance, and detergent free soaps. Use warm water for fighting germs. Soap and water can effectively clean everything from your body and tabletops to carpet and fabric stains.

Lavender Oil – If you don’t like the smell of the tea tree oil, you may want to use lavender. Lavender scented cleansing products give you the added benefit of calming and mood-lifting aromatherapy. A few drops in the vaporizer to fight colds and infections. You can dilute with water and make an antibacterial spray.

Vinegar – Although not an EPA registered pesticide, studies show that distilled white vinegar kills 99% of bacteria, 82% of mold, and 80% of germs. Keep a spray bottle of straight vinegar handy to clean up any problem area quickly and easily.
