Baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, is affordable and has many practical household uses. Yes, I know over the years more sophisticated, and expensive, products have come along. While these products are good and do the same jobs, but baking soda still works well, if not better. How do you use baking soda? These uses can save you money purchasing multiple products that baking soda can do alone.

Here are some projects to try:

  1. To soften your skin, add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your bath water.
  2. Relieve diaper rash by putting 2 tbsp. of baking soda in your baby's bath water
  3. Mix water with baking soda to create a paste to apply to insect bites, poison ivy, and rashes
  4. For general relief from skin irritations from measles and chicken pox add soda to your bath.
  5. Use 1/2 glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to help relieve heartburn and indigestion.
  6. Stained clothing (oil and grease) - adding baking soda to the wash will help get the stains out better.
  7. Sprinkle soda on a damp cloth to clean your fridge and freezer. Removes odors.
  8. Open a fresh box of baking soda as a deodorizer in your fridge and freezer, this absorbs odors longer than just cleaning.  From time to time shake up the box and replace every 2 months.
  9. Baking soda absorbs odors from kitty litter.  To the bottom of the litter box add 1-part baking soda and then add a layer of kitty litter on top.
  10. For fresher laundry add 1/2 cup baking soda to in each load.
  11. When cleaning your combs and brushes use baking soda and warm water.
  12. Use soda and water when washing food and beverage containers.
  13. Make your own baking powder - sift and stir together 1-part cornstarch, 1-part baking soda to 2 parts of Cream of Tartar.
  14. Always keep a box of baking soda for electrical fires and in the kitchen in case of a grease fire.  Add the powder by the handful over the fire to safely put it out.
  15. Keep baking soda in the garage and car again for electrical fires. This won't damage cart or anything it touches.
  16. Natural vegetables and fruit cleaner. Add to water, soak and rise your produce.
  17. Remove odors and clean trash cans with baking soda.
  18. Soak and wash cloth diapers with soda.
  19. 3 tablespoons, 1 quart of warm water to clean marble-topped furniture. Allow solution to stand 3-5 minutes (depending on condition) and then rinse.
  20. Use a clean damp cloth and baking soda to clean Formica counter tops.
  21. Baking soda can be used to put out fires – wood, rugs, drapes, clothing, and upholstery.
  22. To remove stale smells from cooling containers and thermoses wash in baking soda and water.
  23. Create a baking soda and water paste to for stubborn stain removal from plastic, marble, and Formica.

The cool breeze of winter is soothing to your senses but can cause havoc to your skin. This winter, follow these simple 5 tips to prevent dryness, cracking and irritation and enjoy beautiful skin even in the cold months.

5 essential skin care regimen for a glowing skin in winter

1. Exfoliation
Dead cells tend to be dry and coarse requiring regular exfoliation, specially in the winter months. Exfoliation helps cellular regeneration and allows new and healthy skin to surface. The new skin is moist and remains hydrated for a longer time.

2. Moisturization
Moisturize your skin daily with a good moisturizer that has ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E, or  other natural hydrating element to keep your skin soft and supple during winter.  Such natural ingredients comprises of essential fatty acids required by our bodies and keep the skin moisturized the whole day.

3. Night Cream for Deep Skin Nourishment
Consider using a hydrating night cream for deep nourishment in case you have dry skin. Opt for a night creams that contain regenerating ingredients like avocado oil that would repair and penetrate deep into your skin for deep moisturization while you are asleep.

4. Wear Scarf to Protect your Face and Neck
The chilly winter breeze dries out your skin causing skin irritation and discomfort. So use a warm scarf to cover your neck, chin and cheeks. In addition, if you wear a hat or hood it would protect your forehead and head from the harsh weather.

5. Drink lots of Water
The golden rule to keep your skin hydrated is to keep your body hydrated. As reported in the Canada’s Food Guide, consume at least 30 to 45 mL (2 to 3 tbsp.) of unsaturated fats and oils everyday and drink  9 to 13 cups of water each day to keep your skin hydrated.

Most important tip is to stay happy and stress-free for a beautiful and glowing skin.

Facial Scrub: Mix baking soda with oatmeal, lemon juice, orange juice or honey for a DIY face-mask to cleanse and moisturize (with honey).

Tooth Whitening: Sprinkle baking soda onto your toothbrush, then brush normally for whiter teeth and fresh breath.

Mouthwash: Mix two teaspoons of baking soda with one cup of water for DIY mouthwash.

Shampoo: Skip the expense and chemicals of store-bought shampoo by making your own. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda for every eight ounces of water, and put in a bottle of your choice. Shake until thoroughly mixed, then use in place of your regular shampoo.

Exfoliate: Mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Spread on your body wherever you would like to exfoliate.

Clear Acne: Make a paste of baking soda and water, then place on acne to gently dry it out. Wash off after five to 10 minutes, depending on the sensitivity of your skin.

Soften Skin: Pour baking soda into your bath for clean and soft skin without chemical filled cosmetics.

Soothe Skin: To calm itchy or burning skin, make a paste of baking soda and water, then apply to the affected area. Allow to sit for five to 15 minutes, depending on your skin’s sensitivity, then wipe away with a damp cloth.

Antacid: To fight heartburn and indigestion, mix one teaspoon of baking soda with one glass of water. Sip until your stomach is calmed.

Using baking soda around your home is an easy way to replace expensive and potentially dangerous chemical cleaners and chemical filled cosmetics. Try replacing some of your current products and enjoy the many benefits baking soda.
