25 Ways to Use Baking Soda, Part 1

1/22/2016

Picture
Baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, is affordable and has many practical household uses. Yes, I know over the years more sophisticated, and expensive, products have come along. While these products are good and do the same jobs, but baking soda still works well, if not better. How do you use baking soda? These uses can save you money purchasing multiple products that baking soda can do alone.

Here are some projects to try:

  1. To soften your skin, add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your bath water.
  2. Relieve diaper rash by putting 2 tbsp. of baking soda in your baby's bath water
  3. Mix water with baking soda to create a paste to apply to insect bites, poison ivy, and rashes
  4. For general relief from skin irritations from measles and chicken pox add soda to your bath.
  5. Use 1/2 glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to help relieve heartburn and indigestion.
  6. Stained clothing (oil and grease) - adding baking soda to the wash will help get the stains out better.
  7. Sprinkle soda on a damp cloth to clean your fridge and freezer. Removes odors.
  8. Open a fresh box of baking soda as a deodorizer in your fridge and freezer, this absorbs odors longer than just cleaning.  From time to time shake up the box and replace every 2 months.
  9. Baking soda absorbs odors from kitty litter.  To the bottom of the litter box add 1-part baking soda and then add a layer of kitty litter on top.
  10. For fresher laundry add 1/2 cup baking soda to in each load.
  11. When cleaning your combs and brushes use baking soda and warm water.
  12. Use soda and water when washing food and beverage containers.
  13. Make your own baking powder - sift and stir together 1-part cornstarch, 1-part baking soda to 2 parts of Cream of Tartar.
  14. Always keep a box of baking soda for electrical fires and in the kitchen in case of a grease fire.  Add the powder by the handful over the fire to safely put it out.
  15. Keep baking soda in the garage and car again for electrical fires. This won't damage cart or anything it touches.
  16. Natural vegetables and fruit cleaner. Add to water, soak and rise your produce.
  17. Remove odors and clean trash cans with baking soda.
  18. Soak and wash cloth diapers with soda.
  19. 3 tablespoons, 1 quart of warm water to clean marble-topped furniture. Allow solution to stand 3-5 minutes (depending on condition) and then rinse.
  20. Use a clean damp cloth and baking soda to clean Formica counter tops.
  21. Baking soda can be used to put out fires – wood, rugs, drapes, clothing, and upholstery.
  22. To remove stale smells from cooling containers and thermoses wash in baking soda and water.
  23. Create a baking soda and water paste to for stubborn stain removal from plastic, marble, and Formica.
  24. Get glass and stainless steel coffee pots (does not work on aluminum) with warm water and soda.
  25. Put 1/2 tablespoon and water in your coffee maker and run it through the making cycle with a soda.

How to Iron Like a Pro

7/16/2014

Picture
The prospect of ironing a shirt has you bewildered, just follow these instructions and before you know it you’ll have a perfectly ironed one that would make your mama proud.

The first thing to do is choose a well-lighted area with a clean floor to set up the ironing board. In other words, you don’t want to be ironing next to the dog dish where you might accidentally drag a sleeve through. Place the ironing board so that the wide end is to your right, if you’re right handed, and near an electrical plug. Most ironing boards are adjustable for height. Set yours so that it is about waist level for you.

If the shirt you will be ironing islinen or is very wrinkled from the wash, spray the shirt lightly with water using a spray bottle. Roll the shirt up and wrap it in a towel for five to ten minutes. This will allow the moisture to distribute evenly. You want it to be only slightly damp when you iron it.

Fill the water reservoir of your iron to the full line with cool water. Some irons recommend distilled water, which is a good idea if your tap water is hard. Minerals from the water will build up in the iron over time and cause the steam function not to work properly. Also a mineral buildup can cause the iron to spit and even leave rust-like stains on your garments.

Plug in the iron and set the temperature gauge to the setting specified for the fabric of your shirt. If you’re unsure, check the label on the shirt. Set the iron on its end point up or on a stand while it heats and during ironing when you need both hands to adjust the garment on the ironing board. Set the iron on the square end of the ironing board.

When the iron is hot, turn on the steam feature. Unroll the damp shirt and face the ironing board with the square end and the iron to your right. Hold the shirt by the collar right side of the shirt facing you and spread the collar out on the ironing board. You will be ironing the underside of the collar first. Press the collar from the point edges to the middle. Turn the collar over and press the other side in the same way. Sometimes the collar will have “ease” that allows it to be smooth when it is curved around your neck. Ironing the collar toward the center will prevent you from ironing the extra “ease” fabric into a little crease where the collar is top stitched. If you notice “ease” fabric, just let it run in front of your iron to the center without making a crease. If you like, you can fold the collar down as it will be worn and lightly press it so that the fold is more distinct and the collar lies flatter against your neck.

Next take the shirt and pull it onto the tapered end of the ironing board so that the back yoke is flat on the board and the board extends a little into one sleeve. Press half of the yoke. Turn the shirt around and place it on the board so that the un-ironed half of the yoke is on the board. Smooth the yoke out with your hands so that it is flat and then press it with the iron. If the entire yoke will lie flat, you can iron it without changing its position.

Sleeves can be a little tricky, but the secret is to take your time and be sure the fabric is flat with no big wrinkles before you apply the iron. First flatten one cuff on the ironing board and iron it. Then take that sleeve by the seam and lay the whole sleeve flat on the ironing board. If you can see the crease on the top of the sleeve from previous ironing, try to match it again so that you have a single crease line on the sleeve. Start at the top where the sleeve is sewn onto the shirt and work your way down to the cuff. The placket may need to be held with your free hand as you iron it, but be careful not to burn your fingers. The steam coming out of the iron can be scalding. Turn the sleeve over and iron the other side. Repeat the process with the other sleeve.

Now you’re ready to iron the body of the shirt. With the collar to your left, place the left side of the shirt on your ironing board. On a man’s shirt, this will be the side with the buttonholes. It may be easier to iron the upper portion by turning the shirt slightly so that the tapered part of the ironing board slips into the sleeve a little. Iron around the collar carefully as it is easy to cause a wrinkle here. Pull the shirt flat on the ironing board again and iron the placket and the rest of the front left side. Rotate the shirt toward you so that half of the back is on the ironing board. Smooth it out with your hands and iron it. Keep rotating, smoothing, and ironing until you come to the right front of the shirt. Iron the top section first then the rest of it.

You can now put it on a hanger. Make sure it is hanging straight and that the sleeves are flat and folded softly toward the front. Buttoning the collar button and the first button or two will help the shirt keep its shape. Button the collar buttons on button-down shirts. Hang it in the closet with space around it so that other clothes do not crush your freshly ironed shirt.

Beginning Laundry Care for Bachelors

By Ask Men Editors

Patience is a virtue; one that I unfortunately don't yet possess. One thing I do have, however, is expensive taste in clothing. Alas, an expensive wardrobe frequently involves extra maintenance such as ironing, which incidentally requires patience and some basic know-how.

Now ironing is not something I particularly enjoy, as it's a time consuming and tedious process. But with my cleaning bills going through the roof, it's time I started taking matters into my own hands (so to speak).

Despite my aversion for ironing, I had to question people who have a handle on ironing in order to relay this information to you. That being said, I would like to thank my mother for having me over and treating me to such a succulent dinner.

Now I hope I don't have to impart the importance of wearing wrinkle-free clothing; you could be clad in the sleekest designer gear, but if your shirt is creased, no one will take you seriously.

With that in mind, here is what I learned about ironing clothing.

ironing it all out

Step 1
The first step in successfully ironing your clothes is making sure you have the right tools for the job. You'll need a good iron, a hard surface to iron on (preferably an ironing board), and some spray starch.

Using starch will make your clothes feel crisp and look even better, while cutting down your ironing time considerably. Simply lay the garment down flat on the ironing board and spray the starch onto it from at least a foot away before you begin.

Step 2
Before you start ironing, make sure you read each clothing tag carefully to determine the fabric composition and ironing instructions for each item. Then simply choose your iron's settings accordingly.

Step 3
Remember not to leave the hot iron on the same spot for more than a few seconds, as it might burn and permanently damage your clothes.

Step 4
As well, it's best to iron clothes inside out in order to preserve the garment's color and prevent staining.

Shirts
When ironing shirts, start with the collar; move the iron up and down smoothly around the entire area. Then shift down to the cuffs and sleeves.

Finish off that shirt, and don't step out with creased pants.

Throughout the process, make sure to follow and maintain your shirt's natural creases. Once the sleeves are ironed out, move on to the buttonhole area (gradually iron around each buttonhole), after which you should move on to one of the front halves, and finally work your way around to the other front half.

Once you're done, make sure to properly hang your shirt.

Pants
When ironing pants, start with the waistband and slowly move your way down to the cuffs (or hem).

Place your slacks parallel to the ironing board and slowly move the iron up and down, working your way over the entire wrinkled areas. Again, always make sure to follow and maintain your pants' natural lines and creases.

Once you're done, hang your pants without delay.

Laundering Tips
Before even whipping out your iron, make sure your clothes are in tiptop shape because ironing a dirty shirt could permanently set stains into the fabric.

When washing your clothing, always try to use high-quality detergent and fabric softener, as they will help keep the fabric in good shape for a longer amount of time. By using high-end products, your clothes will maintain their durability, which might also render them less likely to wrinkle. Furthermore, throwing a good fabric softener into the mix relaxes your garment's fabric, decreasing the chances of their getting wrinkled in the first place.

Also, get into the habit of hanging up or folding your clothes as soon as the drying cycle is over. Take your clothes out of the dryer as soon as they are dry (they're more likely to wrinkle when their left in the dryer), and that should make your ironing task that much easier.

Tips on Ironing Linen

12/30/2013

Picture
By Emily Patterson

Linen is a fabric spun from the fibers of the flax plant. Linen is one of the oldest known textiles: fabric dated from 8,500 years ago was discovered in a cave in Israel. This fabric is one of the strongest textiles and becomes softer with use. Linen clothing should be hung rather than folded.

Folding repeatedly at the same point breaks down the fibers of the fabric and creates permanent creases. To prevent mildew, store linen only after it is completely dry.

Reduce Wrinkles

  • Wash linen clothing in cold to warm water with mild laundry soap. Dry linen clothing in a dryer on low heat, or hang or lay flat. If using a dryer, remove linen clothing while slightly damp.

Ironing Linen Clothing

  • Iron linen clothing while the clothing is still damp. Use a medium to high setting to press out wrinkles. Use a higher setting for heavier linen clothing. Steam or spray with water to keep the fabric damp while ironing. Iron the inside of lighter shades of the fabric then iron the outside to bring out the rich luster of the fabric. Iron only the wrong side of dark colored linen clothing. Hang immediately after ironing and allow to dry thoroughly. Use spray starch for crispness or use fabric sizing for a softer look to the linen. Protect delicate lace and cutwork with a press cloth. Use a press cloth over pockets, seams and hems to prevent press marks. Wrinkles in linen cannot be steamed out, they must be pressed out with an iron.

Cooking Oils - Use Them For More Than Just Food

11/18/2013

Picture
Vegetable- and plant-based oils, such as olive and sunflower, dislodge dirt, diminish scratches and imperfections, and “hydrate wood that has aged or dried out from exposure to the sun,” says Hunter.

Price: About $7 a pint at supermarkets.
Use Them to Clean Your…

Cast-iron pans: Make a scrubbing paste with vegetable oil and a teaspoon of coarse salt to combat cooked-on debris, then rinse with hot water.

Hands: To get paint off your skin, rub with vegetable oil, then wash thoroughly with soap.

Leather shoes: Wipe away dirt with a damp sponge, then apply a drop of vegetable oil to a soft cloth and rub the surface to remove scuff marks. Buff the shoes with a chamois to a shine.

Rattan and wicker furniture: To prevent rattan and wicker from drying or cracking, lightly brush them with vegetable or sunflower oil and gently rub in with a cloth. Warm the oil on the stove first to thin it and make it easier to apply.

Stainless-steel surfaces: For extra sparkle, pour olive oil onto a cloth and buff.

Wood furniture: Make your own polish by mixing 2 cups olive or vegetable oil with the juice of 1 lemon; work it in with a soft cloth. To smooth out scratches in light-colored wood, rub them with a solution of equal parts olive or vegetable oil and lemon juice.

WOW Look At All Vinegar Can Do

11/11/2013

Picture
This acidic wonder can wipe out tarnish, soap scum, mineral deposits, and more. Among natural cleaners, it’s the clear champ. Distilled white vinegar creates an environment that inhibits the growth of mold, mildew, and some bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella, says Jeffrey Hollender, author of Naturally Clean ($18,amazon.com).

Price: About $1.80 for a quart at supermarkets.

Use It to Clean Your…
Coffeemaker: Pour equal parts vinegar and water into the machine’s water chamber, then switch on the brew cycle. Halfway through, turn off the coffeemaker and let the solution sit for about an hour. Turn it on again to complete the cycle, then run several cycles with clean water.

Dishwasher: To disinfect the interior of the machine, pour ½ cup vinegar into the reservoir and run an empty cycle, says Hunter. Or place a small bowl filled with vinegar on the bottom rack and run an empty cycle.

Drains: Clean drains―and the pipes they’re attached to―by pouring vinegar down them. After 30 minutes, flush with cold water.

Floors: Add ¼ cup vinegar to a bucket of warm water to clean almost any type of floor except marble (vinegar can scratch it) or wood (vinegar can strip it).

Glassware: For spotless hand-washed glasses, add 1 cup vinegar to the rinse water.

Moldy walls: Spray vinegar on the affected areas. After about 15 minutes, rinse and let dry thoroughly.

Shower heads: To combat mineral deposits, pour vinegar into a plastic grocery bag and knot the handles over the neck of the shower head, securing with rubber bands. Let soak overnight. Rinse with water in the morning.

Steam iron: To get rid of mineral deposits, fill the iron with equal parts vinegar and water; press the steam button. Turn off, let cool, empty, and rinse.

Windows: Mix ¼ cup vinegar, 2 cups water, and a squirt of liquid Castile soap in a spray bottle. Spritz windows and wipe with a sheet of newspaper.

Ironing Tips

How to Clean Water Reservoirs

Remove mineral deposits from the water reservoir when the steam action begins to decrease. Pour a solution of 1/3 cup white vinegar and 1/3 cup water into the water reservoir. Heat the iron, and let it steam for about three minutes. Unplug the iron, and position it, sole plate down, on a small glass dish that has been placed in a larger shallow pan. Allow the water to drain from the vents for about an hour. Drain away any remaining solution, and flush the reservoir with clear water before using the iron.

Do you sometimes feel like your clothes look even more wrinkled after you iron them? The following tips and guidelines should help make your ironing go more smoothly.

Ironing Time-Savers

  • Do your ironing in the bedroom. You'll be able to use the bed to sort your laundry, and you'll have hangers close at hand in the closet.

  • Cut your ironing time by putting a piece of aluminum foil under the ironing board cover. The foil will reflect heat so you're actually ironing from both sides at once.

  • Progress from articles or garments needing the lowest temperature to those requiring the highest.

  • For a perfect fit, place your ironing board cover on the board while it's still damp, and let it dry in place.

  • To avoid creases, place a rolled up towel in a sleeve before ironing.
To prevent wrinkles, keep moving freshly ironed surfaces away from you.

  • To prevent collars, cuffs, and hems from puckering, iron them on the wrong side first.

  • Iron double-thickness fabric on the inside first, then on the outside.

  • Acrylic knits can stretch out of shape if moved when wet and warm. Press each section dry, and let it cool completely before moving it on the ironing board.

  • When pressing badly wrinkled corduroy, hold the iron just above the garment and steam the fabric thoroughly. While the corduroy is still damp, quickly smooth it along the ribs with your palm.

  • Revive the nap of velvet or corduroy by pressing it right side down on a piece of the same fabric.

  • If you don't have a sleeve board, insert a rolled-up towel in sleeves so they can be pressed without leaving creases. Or make your own sleeve board from a cardboard tube covered with soft fabric.

  • Quick spray starch can be made at home by slowly adding 1 tablespoon cornstarch to 2 cups water. Stir until the starch is dissolved, and pour the blend into a clean spray bottle. Spray fabrics lightly when ironing.

  • Use paper clips to hold pleats in place.
Restore a shiny look to chintz by ironing the fabric right side down on waxed paper.

  • To keep from giving your wash-and-wear garments a sheen when you do touch-up ironing, turn the clothing inside out and iron the wrong side.

  • To remove wrinkles from a tie, insert a piece of cardboard cut to fit its inside. Cover the tie with cheesecloth, and press lightly with a steam iron.

  • To avoid flattening embroidery or eyelets when ironing, iron them facedown on a thick towel.

  • Hold pleats in place with paper clips when ironing. Be careful that the clips don't snag the fabric -- particularly if it has a loose weave.

Over time, towels build up detergent and fabric softener, leaving them unable to absorb as much water and smelling funky. Recharge them by washing them once with hot water and one cup vinegar, then a second time with hot water and half cup baking soda. This strips the residue and leaves them fresh and able to absorb more water again. Works like a charm!
