Baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, is affordable and has many practical household uses. Yes, I know over the years more sophisticated, and expensive, products have come along. While these products are good and do the same jobs, but baking soda still works well, if not better. How do you use baking soda? These uses can save you money purchasing multiple products that baking soda can do alone.

Here are some projects to try:

  1. To soften your skin, add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your bath water.
  2. Relieve diaper rash by putting 2 tbsp. of baking soda in your baby's bath water
  3. Mix water with baking soda to create a paste to apply to insect bites, poison ivy, and rashes
  4. For general relief from skin irritations from measles and chicken pox add soda to your bath.
  5. Use 1/2 glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to help relieve heartburn and indigestion.
  6. Stained clothing (oil and grease) - adding baking soda to the wash will help get the stains out better.
  7. Sprinkle soda on a damp cloth to clean your fridge and freezer. Removes odors.
  8. Open a fresh box of baking soda as a deodorizer in your fridge and freezer, this absorbs odors longer than just cleaning.  From time to time shake up the box and replace every 2 months.
  9. Baking soda absorbs odors from kitty litter.  To the bottom of the litter box add 1-part baking soda and then add a layer of kitty litter on top.
  10. For fresher laundry add 1/2 cup baking soda to in each load.
  11. When cleaning your combs and brushes use baking soda and warm water.
  12. Use soda and water when washing food and beverage containers.
  13. Make your own baking powder - sift and stir together 1-part cornstarch, 1-part baking soda to 2 parts of Cream of Tartar.
  14. Always keep a box of baking soda for electrical fires and in the kitchen in case of a grease fire.  Add the powder by the handful over the fire to safely put it out.
  15. Keep baking soda in the garage and car again for electrical fires. This won't damage cart or anything it touches.
  16. Natural vegetables and fruit cleaner. Add to water, soak and rise your produce.
  17. Remove odors and clean trash cans with baking soda.
  18. Soak and wash cloth diapers with soda.
  19. 3 tablespoons, 1 quart of warm water to clean marble-topped furniture. Allow solution to stand 3-5 minutes (depending on condition) and then rinse.
  20. Use a clean damp cloth and baking soda to clean Formica counter tops.
  21. Baking soda can be used to put out fires – wood, rugs, drapes, clothing, and upholstery.
  22. To remove stale smells from cooling containers and thermoses wash in baking soda and water.
  23. Create a baking soda and water paste to for stubborn stain removal from plastic, marble, and Formica.
  24. Get glass and stainless steel coffee pots (does not work on aluminum) with warm water and soda.

Put down the lighter fluid and step away from the grill!

4/21/2014

Picture
It is almost that time of year.  The smell of the grill grabs your attention and sends your taste buds into a frenzy.   Oh the smell, oh the sweet smell.  But, according to The EPA, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are listed as dangerous pollutants that damage the ozone and the traditional charcoal grill is the worst offender.

The desire Americans have to fire up the grill each Summer, releases over 14,000 tons of VOCs into the atmosphere.  While using about 46,000 tons of lighter fluid to fire up the grill every year. So what do you do?

Put down the lighter fluid.  By minimizing and even cutting out the use of lighter fluid can greatly reduce the grilling related pollution.  Although self lighting charcoal is not much better for the air, switching to an electric charcoal starter or using a natural ignition agent like "fat wood".

"Fat wood Fire starter consists of two parts:  pinewood and the resin created in that very tree; It’s 100% all-natural. As the tree matures, this natural resin moves downward, collecting in the stump.

With this high concentration of natural resin, we don’t need to add chemicals or additives like so much of our competition." - Source: www.fatwood.com

Non-traditional methods of not using lighting fluid is also safer considering lighting charcoal is the cause of barbecue related injury.  Now you can be safe and kinder to the environment without sacrificing that sweet smell of Summer.

~ Here's to environmentally friendly and safe grilling!

Table Salt For More Than The Table

2/24/2014

Picture
Salt’s granular texture makes it perfectly suited for scouring. Table salt, sea salt, and kosher salt can all be used, but table salt is the cheapest choice.
Price: About 69 cents a pound.

Use It to Clean Your…Artificial flowers: Place the fake blooms inside a paper bag and pour in salt. Close the bag and shake vigorously. The salt will dislodge accumulated dust and dirt.

Glassware: Salt won’t scratch the way a scouring pad can. To get out stubborn stains, add some salt for extra abrasion and scrub.

Greasy pots and pans: Sprinkle salt on cookware to absorb excess grease. Dump out the salt before washing as usual. (Not recommended for nonstick cookware.)

Spills in the oven: If that casserole bubbles over as you take it out of the oven, pour salt on the spill to soak it up. When the oven is cool, wipe with a damp sponge.

Stained teacups and coffee mugs: Sprinkle salt on the outside of a lemon peel; rub the affected area till clean.

Wooden counters and tables: Cover grease splatters with salt to absorb as much as possible. Wait an hour, then brush away the salt.

Cooking Oils - Use Them For More Than Just Food

11/18/2013

Picture
Vegetable- and plant-based oils, such as olive and sunflower, dislodge dirt, diminish scratches and imperfections, and “hydrate wood that has aged or dried out from exposure to the sun,” says Hunter.

Price: About $7 a pint at supermarkets.
Use Them to Clean Your…

Cast-iron pans: Make a scrubbing paste with vegetable oil and a teaspoon of coarse salt to combat cooked-on debris, then rinse with hot water.

Hands: To get paint off your skin, rub with vegetable oil, then wash thoroughly with soap.

Leather shoes: Wipe away dirt with a damp sponge, then apply a drop of vegetable oil to a soft cloth and rub the surface to remove scuff marks. Buff the shoes with a chamois to a shine.

Rattan and wicker furniture: To prevent rattan and wicker from drying or cracking, lightly brush them with vegetable or sunflower oil and gently rub in with a cloth. Warm the oil on the stove first to thin it and make it easier to apply.

Stainless-steel surfaces: For extra sparkle, pour olive oil onto a cloth and buff.

Wood furniture: Make your own polish by mixing 2 cups olive or vegetable oil with the juice of 1 lemon; work it in with a soft cloth. To smooth out scratches in light-colored wood, rub them with a solution of equal parts olive or vegetable oil and lemon juice.

Tips for Toxin-Free Back-to-School Shopping

10/24/2013

Picture
It is that time of year again -- back to school! The kids are compiling their “must have” lists for back-to-school supplies, and parents are wondering what happened to last year’s binder and backpack and how much of what’s on the list is really needed. With so much to consider already, how do you also make sure the supplies your children will carry to school each day and use throughout the year are safe and environmentally friendly?

There’s help. The Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) recently released its fourth annual “Back-to-School Guide to PVC-Free School Supplies,” which looks at environmental and health risks associated with common school supplies.

According to the downloadable guide, lunch boxes, binders and even school bags are often made from vinyl/PVC-- an unnecessary toxic plastic that is dangerous to children’s health and the environment throughout its lifecycle: from production, to use, to disposal. This unique plastic contains chemical additives such as lead, cadmium and phthalates, recently banned in children's toys by Congress. The levels of phthalates in children’s school supplies uncovered intesting commissioned by CHEJ in 2012 would be illegal if these products were toys. Even small exposures can be a risk to children.

Healthy Child Healthy World, an organization dedicated to empowering parents with the tools and resources to protect children from harmful chemicals shares these safe-shopping tips:

1. No lead for lunch. Lunch boxes made from soft plastic vinyl may contain lead. While many manufacturers have responded to consumer concerns by removing this dangerous metal from their products, the safest bet is a metal lunch box or reusable fabric lunch bag.

2. Learn the ABCs of PVC. In addition to lead, polyvinyl chloride, the soft flexible plastic found in everything from those lunch boxes to pencil cases and binders to backpacks and rain gear commonly contains phthalates, a toxic hormone mimicker. Vinyl is identified by a recycling symbol with the number “3” inside it, or the letters “V” or “PVC” underneath. Select PVC-free items instead.

3. Ban the BPA. This potent endocrine disruptor is a common component of the polycarbonate plastics used to make reusable water bottles. And those bottles will add it to whatever they hold—beverages, soups, and more. Look for options made from uncoated stainless steel or those labeled “BPA-free.” Keep in mind the latter isn’t a third party certified claim.

4. Stock up on safer supplies. Many markers and glues contain unsafe chemical additives like phthalates and volatile solvents, which are inhaled when kids use them. Strong fumes and odors are a key clue. Look for scent-free, water-based pens and white glues and glue sticks.

5. Reuse! Keep in mind that you may already have all the pencils, pens, folders, notebooks, calculators, and other things your children need waiting in last year’s scholastic leftovers. The less you purchase, the more you’ll save. And we’re not only talking about money!

Do you have any tips on choosing safe school supplies for children?

Safe Cleaning Products for Pets

By Kimberly Hawthorne, eHow Contributor

According to a booklet written by the EPA and the CPSC (EPA Document #402-K-93-007), the insides of homes are up to 100 times more polluted than outside the home. This is largely due to household cleaners and pesticides. People and pets are affected by continual exposure to chemicals. EPA Document # 400-R-92-012 states that household chemicals may be the cause of increased cancer in humans and animals. One of these toxic chemicals is alkylphenols, the chemicals that make cleaners sudsy.
